How does one be a Christian for 35 years and not understand intercession and what it is to be an intercessor? Raised in a Baptist church, faithful and active as a child and teen in youth group; attending summer camps and Vacation Bible Schools year after year; serving as a young adult as Sunday School teacher, children and youth choir director, Vacation Bible School director, mission trips, etc. etc. etc. Faithful attender and participant in weekly prayer meetings, cottage prayer meetings, whatever kind of prayer meeting was on the calendar, I knew all the acronyms: A. C. T. S., P. R. A. Y., F. A. C. T. S., P. R. A. I. S. E., and kept up an ongoing dialogue with God, yet still knew something was lacking in my prayer life.
Then, in December 2007, I encountered the LORD in a new (to me) way, in Intercessory Worship. Somehow, the combining of worship WITH intercession and intercession WITH worship unlocked my understanding. The prayer format is based on the heavenly picture that we see in Revelation 5, which speaks of the harp and the bowl—worship and prayer. After being a Christian for 35 years and always seeking a deeper walk with God, it was like night and day. The Holy Spirit impacted my heart and placed a calling on my life. I wish I could put into words how it has deepened my relationship with God.
I have a testimony about Jesus!
He is the faithful God. So glad He is the patient God, too! It took me almost 5 years to hear and understand, and then accept the assignment of what He was calling me to do. But, He is worthy of it all. Even when I don’t feel equipped and capable of doing what He has called me to, it’s not by might, not by power, but by My Spirit says the Lord.
“Great is Your faithfulness!” Lamentations 3:23
